Carmack channeling Nujabes on this one. Perfect laid back hip hop.

Maribou State with their usual delicate, richly textured beauty and low-key house grooves. This one is positively hypnotic.

A nice funky house remix here with super classy chords and a big warm groovy bass. Simple and effective with a great atmosphere.

Here’s my own remix of Phoenix’s Trying to Be Cool. Poppy and dancy (hopefully), just how I like it.

For those of you not familiar with his work, Michele Balduzzi aka Phonat is known for being tall, having large hair and functioning as some sort of electronic production wizard. God only knows how he crams so many awesome ideas into each track - some black sorcery, no doubt - but he surely does.

His music is beautiful, dense, melodic, funky, moody, uplifting, groovy, atmospheric and it is - for me at least - the absolute gold standard of style and finesse in electronic music. Each element is controlled with what seems like post-human precision, and every single note seems like it was meant to be there. He juggles all this while bouncing between genres as if such divides never existed in the first place (which they don’t, not if you don’t want them to).

This release focuses mostly on laid back, atmospheric music. Phonat fans will already know it rules, non-fans should just check out this one track on youtube:

Like it? Get his album, it’s awesome

More incredible AWE bass music - this one’s a bit less on the melodic side and a fair bit more on the face-crushing side. His production is incredible - the kick + bass combo is particularly notable for its sheer raw brutality. The snare sounds like a huge robot beating the shit out of another huge robot, and that’s pretty cool. Don’t put this on if you’re about to go to bed.

I might as well get posting about this guy before he takes over the world and everyone’s heard of him anyway - AWE is young producer who makes stupidly intense high energy bass music combined with huge melodies and chord sequences. His music, essentially, does what his moniker would suggest and the hype currently building around him is likely to propel him into the stratosphere in the near future. Go check him out, he’s doing something new and awesome (geddit??!!![?!!??!{?!!}]).

Culprate makes a bunch of different types of music, all well worth checking out. This time he’s doing house and damn, it grooves hard. Those acoustic bass sounds are so ill and I hope to hear more of that in funky house (which I will, because I’m totally gonna steal the idea myself). The buildups are pretty boring but fuck it, who cares, on a track like this it’s just downtime in between instances of that DOPE ASS BASSLINE anyway.

Go on, listen to that and try not to not your head. If you managed, get off my blog.

If you heard the original, this is pretty much just more of the same. Same vocals, same groove, similar instrumentation but some different melodic stuff going on. The synth melodies are nicer and stand out more on this one, pushing an already great track to the next level.

If you didn’t hear the original then this here is some laid back soulful electronica, a great female vocal perfectly accompanied by masterful composition and production.

Russ Chimes on the remix once again, as usual excelling at finding the most hypnotic and memorable phrases to loop over his laid back house sound. There’s a fairly strong 90s house melodic feel to the track, which is cool, but I would have liked to see a lot more of the piano chords that appear around 1:20, they’re awesome.

(He really does like the old Deadmau5 style repeating 3/16th triads but whatever, I’m into that too, especially when he does it.)
